How to Maintain Your Sun-Mar Composting Toilet in 3 Simple Steps

!9#: How to Maintain Your Sun-Mar Composting Toilet in 3 Simple Steps

Whether you've just purchased a new composting toilet system or you're still in the research stages before making an investment, one critical consideration is maintenance. Proper ongoing maintenance of a compost toilet is critical to the system's performance and lifespan. When correctly installed and properly maintained, a good composting toilet system will work perfectly. When homeowners have problems with their systems, such issues can almost always be traced back to improper installation or maintenance. In this article, we'll focus on Sun-Mar composting toilets, one of the older and better known manufacturers of professional composting toilet systems, and we'll explain the three easy steps to maintaining a Sun-Mar unit.

1. Add bulking material. Just like a garden or backyard compost bin, composting toilets rely on the right balance of nitrogen and carbon (also sometimes called greens and browns) to decompose organic matter quickly and without odor. Too much carbon (brown) will cause the composting process to slow down, whereas too much nitrogen (green) will make it smell bad. In a composting toilet, all the human waste that goes in is the nitrogen, or green. This means the homeowner must manually add the carbon, or the brown. In the case of Sun-Mar waterless units, the recommended brown is a bulking material called Compost Sure, a mixture of peat moss and ground hemp stalk. For Sun-Mar water flush systems, the appropriate bulking material is Compost Sure Blue, a similar mixture, just with a higher proportion of hemp stalk. Adding the bulking material is an easy procedure that just involves dumping a cupful (or whatever the appropriate amount is for your Sun-Mar unit) right into the toilet itself. To be sure you know exactly when and how much bulking material to add, always consult your Sun-Mar product manual and follow the instructions carefully.

2. Rotate the drum every 2-3 days. Sun-Mar units operate on the principle of aerobic composting, which is a very fast and low odor method of decomposition. Just as the name would suggest, aerobic composting requires air, or oxygenation of the compost itself. With a Sun-Mar toilet, this process is very simple and does not require the homeowner to come into contact with or even view the contents of the toilet. All that is required is to turn a handle on the outside of the toilet. This handle will in turn rotate the drum inside the toilet, thus aerating the contents. This step should be completed every 2-3 days while the toilet is in use. Failure to do so will result in anaerobic compost that may begin to smell.

3. Empty some compost to the finishing drawer. Every so often, some compost will need to be emptied from the toilet drum into the finishing drawer, a separate holding chamber in the bottom part of the unit. Sun-Mar has designed their toilets to make this step incredibly easy, and again, the homeowner doesn't ever have to come into contact with the waste inside the unit. One the front of every Sun-Mar system is a drum lock, or small knob. Simply pull the knob out and turn the crank handle backward. This will cause the inner drum to rotate around inside the toilet and automatically drop some compost from the drum into the finishing drawer. This process will need to be completed about once or twice a year, depending on how often the toilet is used.

As you can see, maintenance of a composting toilet isn't difficult or complex. It simply requires the ability to follow simple instructions and the diligence to perform those steps on a regular basis. With the proper ongoing maintenance, you will enjoy years on continued use from your Sun-Mar system.

Common Composting Toilet Complaints

!9#: Common Composting Toilet Complaints

If you have recently installed a composting toilet in your home, congratulations. You have made a choice that benefits the environment by saving water, reducing waste production and creating an end product that is a valuable soil amendments. Still, despite all these benefits, if your compost toilet appears to be malfunctioning, you may quickly regret making the switch to a toilet composting system.

When properly installed and used, a compost toilet should be odor free and produce a beautiful, rich compost that is easy to remove within six to twelve months. However, for many owners it can take months, even years, to learn how to properly use and maintain their compost toilets and they may frequently find themselves plagued by two common problems:

1) Excess liquid build up in the composting toilet system. This is probably the most common complaint of new composting toilet owners for almost every brand of composting toilet currently manufactured. A composting toilet will simply not work properly if there is too much fluid in the system, and this can lead to leaks, odors and make emptying the composting toilet a very unpleasant task.

There are, however, ways to control fluid build up in a compost toilet. In general, this is an issue of striking the proper balance between wet and dry materials, and if you find you composting toilet system is becoming saturated, you likely need to add more dry material during use. Electric fans and heaters are also of use to help evaporate and control moisture (meaning non-electric units need special attention to be paid to this problem before it develops), and some units also have a urine separator system which diverts urine away from the main composting reactor.

2) Odor. As mentioned above, with a properly functioning system, there should be no foul odors. Odor signals a problem with the composting system, letting you know that there is something out of balance with they system. Frequently this is due to liquid build up, as discussed above. When there is excess liquid in the system, it will revert from the relatively odor-free process of aerobic decomposition to one of anaerobic decomposition, which is often foul smelling. To fix this issue, you will need to make sure you have the proper balance and that system reverts back to aerobic decomposition processes.

For most of us who grew up using flush toilets, learning how to properly use and maintain a compost toilet can be a difficult lesson to learn. However, taking responsibility for your own waste and transform it into a environmentally beneficial product, is also a very empowering process and one which also benefits the environment for generations to come.

Alternative 3: Evidence that we Landed on Mars in 1962

!9# Alternative 3: Evidence that we Landed on Mars in 1962

"Alternative 3" was the final documentary done by the well respected "Science Report" of Anglia Television in England on April 1st 1977. Within an hour of broadcasting the television station issued a hurried statement stating that the show was a hoax.

We believe that the film is 95% fake but that 5% of it is the most important footage of the 20th Century and totally accurate. That is the NASA footage of people on Mars. We believe that much of the story is also the truth.

Besides filming the show on April 1st, the producers later said that the show was fake. It was quite evident at the end of the movie that something was fake because almost every single person filmed on the show was an actor, not genuine footage. It's a huge let-down when the list of credits role at the end, and a source of major confusion if you are expecting that this whole thing is real. We believe that there is no way that a respected documentary would be explicit that it was produced on April 1st unless it was decided beforehand that that was what they wanted to do.

The people who created this show risked a HUGE amount. They risked that people would never again trust that anything on TV or portrayed by science is the truth. However, we believe that somebody felt that this risk was worth taking because they needed to DISCREDIT THE NASA TAPE OF MARS and the story that went with it, before somebody got it out to the public.

Remember, in the times we are in, "DISCERNMENT " is a KEY ABILITY. Learn to trust your intuition, your gut feelings, your "knowingness" while at the same time being as rational as Sherlock Holmes.

The TV Show "Alternative 3" starts off as an investigation of the "Brain Drain" of England where hundreds of top scientists were leaving the country. Then it turns out that 24 of these scientists just vanished, never to be heard from again.

The name "Alternative 3" comes from the third of three different propositions to save the human species from extinction in the event that humans are wiped off from planet earth by global warming, catastrophes etc.

One man mailed a reel of video tape to an editor at a newspaper whom he was friends with. He then drives to meet with this editor but is killed in a car crash before he gets there. The Science Report TV Show gets hold of the tape but there is only static on the tape.

Later another man who has connections with NASA gives to the Science Report a decoder circuit board from NASA which makes the tape viewable.

What you will see on this tape may do for you what it did for me - my hair stood on end (I believe this is an indication of the truth). It shows the view through a window of some kind of flying vehicle that is flying over the surface of Mars. You see a blue sky and you can hear American and Russians in the background cheer that they have found life on Mars, when they see a small burrowing animal on the ground.

The 'bad guys' have a spiritual law that they have to tell you what is going on, it's just that they don't have to portray the truth in any particular way. Hence there is much truth in many movies. We believe that the movie "Total Recall" has elements of truth in it also. Al Bielek, survivor of the Philadelphia Experiment, said that he remembers being taken to Mars and seeing ancient machines like those on Total Recall, and that these machines were used to recreate an atmosphere there, which had been locked up in the soil.

Interestingly, they mentioned this same theory in Alternative 3 - that the atmosphere had been locked up in the soil.

After the show, a book came out called "Alternative 3" by Leslie Watkins. Here is what Leslie Watkins had to say:

Placed in the public domain from the VANGARD SCIENCES archives on October 28 1989. PO BOX 1031, Mesquite, TX 75150. Voice phone (Jerry 214-324-8741...Ron 214-484-3189 KeelyNet (214) 324-3501

The Truth about Alternative 3 from its author, Leslie Watkins

(This article is taken from the Windwords newsletter) address not available

In our June issue, we told you about the controversial book Alternative 3, by British author Leslie Watkins. In out attempt to find out if the shocking theories in the book were true, we called Avon Books, the American publisher; they said the book was out of print in the states.

We called Penguin Books in London and found that it was listed on their NON-FICTION list.

A senior editor there told us that it was officially classified as FICTION BASED ON FACT.

The author's agent told us it was most definitely fiction.

We wrote to the author himself to try to get the real story, and here is the letter he sent us.

Dear Ms. Dittrich: Thank you for your letter, which reached me today. Naturally, I am delighted by your interest in Alternative 3 and by the fact that you plan to sell it in the Windwords bookstore. I will certainly cooperate in any way I can.

The correct description of Alternative 3 was given to you by the representative from Penguin Books. The book is based on fact, but uses that fact as a launchpad for a HIGH DIVE INTO FICTION. In answer to your specific questions:

1) There is no astronaut named Grodin. 2) There is no Sceptre Television and the reported Benson is also fictional. 3) There is no Dr. Gerstein. 4) Yes, a "documentary" was televised in June 1977 on Anglia Television, which went out to the entire national network in Britain. It was called Alternative 3 and was written by David Ambrose and produced by Christopher Miles (whose names were on the book for contractual reasons).

This original TV version, which I EXPANDED IMMENSELY for the book, was ACTUALLY A HOAX which had been scheduled for transmission on April Fools' Day. Because of certain problems in finding the right network slot, the transmission was delayed. The TV program did cause a tremendous uproar because viewers refused to believe it was fiction.

I initially took the view that the basic premise was so way-out, particularly the way I aimed to present it in the book, that no one would regard it as non-fiction. Immediately after publication, I realized I was totally wrong.

In fact, the amazing mountains of letters from virtually all parts of the world- including vast numbers from highly intelligent people in positions of responsibility-convinced me that I had ACCIDENTALLY trespassed into a range of top-secret truths.

Documentary evidence provided by many of these correspondents decided me to write a serious and COMPLETELY NON-FICTION sequel.

Unfortunately, a chest containing the bulk of the letters was among the items which were mysteriously LOST IN TRANSIT some four years when I moved from London, England, to Sydney, Australia, before I moved on to settle in New Zealand.

For some time after Alternative 3 was originally published, I have reason to suppose that my home telephone was being tapped and my contacts who were experienced in such matters were convinced that certain intelligence agencies considered that I probably knew too much.

So, summing up, the book is FICTION BASED ON FACT. But I now feel that I inadvertently got VERY CLOSE TO A SECRET TRUTH. I hope this is of some help to you and I look forward to hearing from you again.

With best wishes, Leslie Watkins

Captain Bill Robertson in a Lecture he gave in 1990 made these comments on the NASA footage which comes at the end of the Alternative 3 show. It would appear that Captain Bill believes the whole video to be true, but his comments are of interest never-the-less. (Source: http://www.abovetopsecret.com/pages/alternative3.html)

And you are going to see it and are going to see and analyze what it really means.

This is the supposed landing on Mars 1962 by the Americans. That's the tape.

Now the thing he said at the last, he says - Boy, when they take the wraps off this, it'll be the biggest day in history. 22nd May 1962, we're on Mars and we have life.

Now, we're gonna watch this - I'll show you something interesting. OK let's pause. All right, here you go. Look; let's first of all examine the possibility that this was made in Hollywood. If they did make it in Hollywood what would be the point of making it so secret that they had to kill people to keep it from being known? Would they just be doing it to...Why would they keep it a secret, if they made it in Hollywood? They would want everyone to know about it and say - Look we landed on Mars! and they never said that. So what would they want it for as a fake, and how could this professor have recorded it coming from outer space, this tape, if they made it in Hollywood, you see. So let's take their word for it is true. They did kill enough people, they threatened the radio station with closing the license - I mean the television with closing the license of the program, they did fire the people who worked on it. And when the book came out they banned it in America. So knowing all those indicators of a secret conspiracy going on, let's take it as a true tape, but let's analyze it as to what is the real truth.

Look at that porthole they are taking the pictures out of. That is not from an earth type spacecraft. That has a square, curved outer hull surface, and it's very thin as you can see. There's no bolts, you understand, and all that stuff they have on American and Russian spacecrafts. Right, it's very big. You remember the first spaceships that went up. They had little tiny holes in them like that with bolts, like on a ship. That's the first point I want you to see. Now I want you to see something else here. There, you see the curves? Aha, you see this - stand by to scan, that's what he said. Now watch this, watch what happens to the picture. See how slowly it's moving? America and Russia never had any spaceships that are landing on the Moon, landing on any other planet that could slow down and do this. Watch this: the ship is rotating, slowly. Then it stops - Stand by to move on. Watch... see there, now they're back on the landing pattern.

If you analyze this from an aeronautical point of view, you have the ship coming in. All of a sudden it stops, rotates around like this stand by to go-ahead, resume landing. Does that remind you of anything? It reminds you of the stories of "flying saucers". They go, they stop, they move around a little bit, they go. All right. What's that? (I never saw that one before.) OK, we go on with the analysis.

That, see this? Every time they change mode there's interference on the transmission, or they've stopped the transmission and started it again. This interference with any radio transmission frequency is caused by a high intensity electromagnetic field. Also this is in the stories of UFO reports where people's car radios stop and the pilots, their compass goes around like this. There are also stories written how, obviously, UFO's are controlled by high intensity electromagnetic fields. And if you were broadcasting from there back to Earth you would expect the broadcast to be interfered with every time they had to change the controls, altitude or path of the flying saucer, and it does!

And now... watch again. Now look how slowly it's going. Temperature 4 degrees Celsius, 21 km/h wind. 707,7 Mb air pressure. 760 (is normal), no 1013 Mb. This is only 7/10 as much as Earth. OK, next. I want you to observe this place they're coming toward. You didn't notice that, did you? There's a tower, like a control tower. And there are 1, 2, 3 pads to land on, but they are only round ones, and they look like they are a hundred or so feet in diameter, 30-40 meter or more. 1, 2, 3 and they're round. Now what could you land there if you have never been there before? Could they have built a landing base, if they had never been there before? Now watch this when they land: They get to static again, because they have to put in the electromagnetic field. So you don't see them actually landing there, but you can believe they are going to land on this one or one of these. Right. Watch that closely. You see that? There it is, there it comes. Stand by for landing. Let's do it again, so you can see it. There are: 1, 2, and 3. There's the building. Now they are obviously sitting on one of the pads looking out away from the building. And now they see the brown very closely. Americans... some kind of mole, a mole. OK, now.

What the cover-up was, what the secret of Alternative 3 was, which is still a secret, is that the Americans did get to Mars in 1962 with a radio and television camera, but they didn't make the ship. That was an alien flying saucer. You wanna see it again? This is the big secret. That's what they didn't want anyone to know. They were just passengers. Imagine it.... on a flying saucer, you see it? The base, the little pads. OK.

So I told you it would be amazing. I took you on a videotrip on a flying saucer as the first thing. That's how they work, just like that, you see it from the inside. How did you like that trip? That was the big secret of Alternative 3. The Americans did not land on Mars. They took as passengers on a flying saucer. All this Alternative 3 stuff was cover.

Composting Toilet Do's and Don'ts

!9# Composting Toilet Do's and Don'ts

Homeowners with septic systems are accustomed to being cautious about what goes down their toilets. These folks know that you don't want things like sanitary napkins, harsh chemicals, or an excessive amount of toilet paper going into a septic tank. Along those same lines, homeowners with composting toilets must also be careful about what goes their toilet, too. In this article, we'll cover some basic do's and don'ts when it comes to what goes in your compost toilet.

To premise this discussion, we'll begin with a brief explanation of what a composting toilet is and how it works. These eco friendly fixtures are a water-saving alternative to a traditional toilet. Rather than being hooked up to a sewer and flushing waste away with water, they are designed with a composting drum where waste is broken down by tiny microbes and oxygen. Special venting systems ensure that compost toilets operate 100% odorlessly, and after several months, you are left with ordinary compost, a non-offensive substance that looks and smells just like garden soil.

One of the first and most important considerations with a composting toilet is not to add anything that might affect the microbes' ability to do their job of breaking down the waste. This means no harsh chemicals or cleaning agents such as bleach or ammonia products, as these will kill the beneficial bacteria. A good alternative cleaning solution is a mixture of baking soda and water.

Another potentially harmful substance is antibiotic medicine. Some people like to dispose of old medications by flushing them down their toilets. This is not a good idea with a composting toilet, because any medicines designed to kill bacteria will harm the microbes in your compost. Furthermore, if you or someone in your home has a chronic illness for which they must take antibiotics over an extended period of time (for example, 6 months at a time, or longer), it might be a good idea for that person not to use the composting system, because that antibiotic medicine will be present in their waste.

It's also important to understand that composting toilets vary in size based on the number of people who will be using the fixture on a daily basis. For example, a single adult would not require nearly as large a unit as would a family of six people. The capacity of the toilet, based on the number of people using it, takes into account waste and toilet paper. It does not factor in additional capacity or space for things like feminine sanitary products, paper towels, baby wipes, diapers, or facial tissue. Adding these items not only affects the capacity of your system, but many of these items will also be slow to biodegrade, meaning you may end up with finished compost that still contains part of a sanitary napkin in it-not something you want to deal with. Educate all members of the family that the only items to go in the composting toilet are waste and toilet paper; everything else belongs in the garbage can.

When it comes to composting toilets, a little common sense and thoroughly reading the manufacturer's instructions will go a long way toward protecting your investment and keeping the unit working properly. Just as with a septic system, taking good care of your composting toilet and keeping certain items out that don't belong will ensure that it performs as it should and lasts as long as possible.

Composting Toilets

!9# Composting Toilets

Ready to go waterless with your toilet? I'm not talking about waterless urinals, though that's a distinct option. I'm talking about composting toilets.

In 1992 the US government required that toilets be more water efficient; no more five gallons per flush could be sold. Pressure assist and low-flush toilets replaced the water hogs. Then came dual flush toilets.

Composting toilets have been around a long time, but haven't been used in many homes or offices because of their various constraints -- smell, waste disposal, acceptability. But, as with so many things, the technology has improved enough that not only can they be used indoors comfortably, but they are being used indoors.

Do you know what a composting toilet is? It's not the same as a latrine or an outhouse. It is a device that processes human excrement through aerobic processing, and with proper ventilation, to create decomposed, odorless matter that's 10-30 percent of its original volume. You can choose from self-contained and central (or remote) units. I'll cover more of the system works in a moment.

I was intrigued with the composting toilets on Longs Peak, Rocky Mountain National Park, CO, as a young adult. They are located just below the Keyhole, at the top of the Boulder Field, the last chance to "de-fuel" comfortably before the push to the top. The waste was dried with solar panels "cooking" the deposits, which were then packed down the mountain by pack animals at the end of the season. What a great way to protect that fragile environment. And what a pleasant way to "de-fuel".

When My Bigger Half and I started designing our new home in 2002, a friend pointed us to a "new" dual flush toilet. The concept was new to me, though evidently Caroma has been selling dual-flush toilets in Australia for a long time. We liked what we saw -- literally; it was demonstrated by a plumbing store in Denver. We bought four of them: one for the yurt we lived in as the house was being built, and three for the house.

But what's this about no-flushing toilets that I'm talking about now? It's about options and progress, reducing ground water pollution, and major water conservation measures.

I did research the idea of using a composting toilet in the yurt as a way of conserving water and being greener. Ultimately the concept was rejected because at that time a lot of effort was required to keep them working well, and not stinking indoors. Heck, we already had cats to help in that department, we didn't need any more ways of adding aroma! We travel just enough that the regular maintenance required to keep them working properly would be an issue, I felt. When I'm not sold on the effort required to properly maintain a system you can imagine it's hard to sell My Bigger Half on the system.

But recently I started seeing articles about the "new" composting toilets and how homeowners were installing them in middle-America homes and office buildings. They've been a fixture (no pun intended) in Europe for a long time. Natural Home magazine says this is the fastest growing trend in green building. What a radical concept! I had to investigate. Maybe we'd be using this in our next home.

What's different now from several years ago? Why do I think we can deal with this different approach to our toilet needs? I think it's the development of the central unit that has made the difference to me. A central holding tank allows multiple toilets to make deposits. There are at least two bins, one for daily use and one for composting or processing the waste; that reduces contact with partially processed excrement. They can be fully automated now, so no more bulk additions (addition of straw, leaves, or grass clippings to create air pockets for better composting). You can select models that require a bit of electricity, but that can be supplied with solar or battery power. Moisture is an important aspect to some of the systems -- for proper curing and aerobic processing; either urine or water can provide that moisture. The collecting unit can be located in the basement, a crawl space, or outdoors.

While these units are more expensive than even an expensive flush toilet, ultimately they are much cheaper. I saw prices of up to ,500 for a multi-chamber remote system and one toilet (additional toilets are extra). But that still saves you the cost of a connection to the sewer or installing a septic system with leach field and holding tank. If you go with a waterless system you also don't have the cost of bringing water piping to each toilet (or the sewage away from each toilet), or the cost of the water for every flush. Since toilets are credited for comprising about one quarter of a home's water use, that becomes a handsome savings quickly.

Self-contained units are also options, but given our lifestyle I don't anticipate that an option. But you might. Whichever style you select, be sure to look for a toilet system that conforms to American National Standards Institute's (ANSI) composting toilets standards.

The central-unit brands I repeatedly saw during my research include:
BioLet Clivus Multrum Envirolet Sun-Mar

The other thing that caught my attention with the "new" composting toilets was that commercial buildings are even starting to install them. The University of British Columbia's CK Choi Building installed five Clivus Multrum central units, serving 300 employees with 12 toilets. And the Institute of Asian Research, in Vancouver, BC, Canada, isn't even connected to the city's sewer system. It instead went with composting toilets and urinals -- in a 30,000 square foot office complex -- and a greywater system for handling water from sinks and water fountains where the water irrigates the landscape which cleans the water. Cool!

My Bigger Half and I already conserve water well, typically using less than 1,000 gallons/month -- even with my greenhouse. Water savings isn't the focus here, though it's important to us. It's more about not polluting ground water and for disturbing the land the very least we can. We'll still pay the water company as if we are using 2,000 gallons/month. We just won't have a 750-ish square foot leach field marring the land, or a holding tank to deal with.

I enjoy striving to be greener by the day. We look for new ways to get greener. Opting for composting toilets in the next house and office may be one way we can do that. Go green! Go waterless.
